ILL Information

Introduction

The Interlibrary Loan service of the Library provides access to library materials in other research institutions around the world. Participating libraries share their resources with students and faculty from other institutions. All Bogazici University faculty, research assistants and postgraduate students are eligible to borrow materials via this service.

What may be borrowed?

Most books and photocopies of journal articles can be obtained.

Please note that the following kinds of materilas are usually not obtainable from other libraries:
- Reference books
- Rare books
- Complete volumes of bound or unbound periodicals

Charges

For books it is the responsibility of borrowers to pay the shipment costs.
- For photocopies of journal articles, borrower must pay the cost of the photocopy.

NOTE: It is sometimes not possible to obtain items free. In these cases, the Reference Staff will contact the requester before completing the transaction. It is the requester's responsibility to meet all the costs.

How to request materials?

Before applying for an interlibrary loan, you should confirm with a member of the Reference Department that items are not available at the Library.
A separate form should be filled out for each item needed, and the information provided should be as complete as possible. Request forms are available at the Reference Department.

How long does it take?

Obtaining a material from another library depends on many factors, icluding the responsiveness and location of the owning libraries, and/or the availability of the desired item. It is difficult to predict how long the process will take for an individul request.

When locating a requested item, first the library searches the item in libraries in Turkey. If the item is found in Turkey, the average time for delivery is about 1-2 weeks depending on the lending library's shipment method. If not, it is about 3-4 weeks. Sometimes, an item has to be requested from several libraries before successfully obtaining it. This, of course, extends the delivery time.

NOTE: If you have a deadline beyond which the material will not be useful for you, you must specify that date on the request form.

Notification

Users will be notified when requested a material has arrived at the Library. You may choose to be notified by phone or e-mail. The due date of the material and any special instructions will accompany the material.

Loan Period

Loan periods are established by the lending library. In general loan periods range from 2-4 weeks. All interlibrary loan items must be returned by the due date.

Another part of the ILL service is to provide access for non-Bogazici users to collections held at the Library. Not all library materials are available through interlibrary loan.
